New technology is now available for patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery. The MAKO robotic system can now be used for full knee replacements, prior to 2018 this technology was only availabe for patients undergoing partial knee replacement surgery. Most patients with knee arthritis have arthritis throughout the entire knee and are not candidates to undergo partial knee replacement so this is great news for many patients. The MAKO robotic arm allows for precise bone removal and implant placement to allow for better knee function after surgery. The knee can be balanced using the computer navigation during the surgery to allow for better range of motion and longer lasting implants.
